Silana

On a hunt for a nearby beach we took the scenic coastal drive to the other side of Ovalau island to a village called Silana. Here we spent the day relaxing on the beach owned by a Fijian couple and headed into the water for a spot of snorkelling.... which ended  up being more impressive than our barrier reef tour.

After enjoying some afternoon tea, the owners of the beach took us on a tour of the village. As it is quite a traditional village, a guide was necessary, as guests need to ask permission to enter.

Before heading home we played with the owners daughter Sala who has cerebral palsy. She was very intrigued by us both and enjoyed us chasing her while shouting “Thi thi” meaning Run Run, a game encouraged by her parents to help strengthen her legs. They told us about how they bury her in the sand up to her shoulders a couple of times a week to help strengthen her muscles as she fights to move in the sand. Unsure how i feel about this....
